2. Configuration - FreeDB/Database Options

One preliminary configuration step needs to be made:

  • Hit F12 or click "freedb/Database Options" in the EAC menu.

FreeDB is a database with CD information. It relies on user contributions - all the CD information that you get from freedb is there because some other user sent it to the database. You can contribute, too, if you find that a CD you rip is not yet in the database, or if you want to provide correct information for a certain CD. You find that option by clicking "Submit CD Information To freedb" in the Database menu.

  • Type an e-mail address into the box. It does not have to be valid, but don't just use the default one.
  • Click "Get active freedb servers", and then select any one of them.

If you have problems accessing freedb later on, repeat this step.

You may also want to check "On a connection error, retry query using a different server from the server list".

2b. Using MusicBrainz

In addition to the freedb servers that ship with EAC, it is also possible to add MusicBrainz to the list. It may work to simply type it into the text box, or you may have to add it to the Windows registry.

  • So, if you want to try using MusicBrainz with EAC, try first with simply typing "http://freedb.musicbrainz.org:80/~cddb/cddb.cgi" (without the quotes) into the Freedb server: box.
  • Click OK, insert a CD into the drive, and see if it works.

The mb2freedb URL can also be included by adding a registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AWSoftware\EAC\Internet Options\Hosts\http://freedb.musicbrainz.org:80/~cddb/cddb.cgi

If you add that registry key, the mb2freedb URL will be selectable from the drop-down list the next time EAC is started.

Information about adding MusicBrainz copied from MusicBrainz Community Weblog.
